PROLOGUE

In the beginning there were dreams.  Good and bad, they all had their purpose in human minds.  Yet in the past, dragons would come and through their magic found the dreams as a source of nourishment.  Being powerful creatures themselves, they found all the sustenance they needed in nightmares.  For decades, humans enjoyed peaceful rest and never feared bad visions in their sleep.  In return the dragons never went hungry and from the visions..gave birth to a new race called the drekans.

Emerging when the dragons would have intense headaches from the consumption of too many dreams, they danced in the smoke from their nostrils and appeared only a few years old at first.  Yet these small humanoids were of intense beauty when born. Their hair was often the shades of yellow or red, and each one had deep green eyes resembling emeralds in any light.  Their faces flawless and forms lithe, they found it easy to fly when sprouting large, leathery red wings that normally remained hidden.  Other than the wings, it was impossible to tell they were part dragon save for intense heat they could sometimes radiate from their body.  As time went on the drekans flourished, until tragedy became inevitable.

Eventually a powerful king came to rule the land who was not only of strong body, but of strong mind.  It was even rumored that he made deals with demons who  taught him evil magic.  Showing a demeanor of intimidation, he easily came to rule all kingdoms and never aged a day throughout the years.  While peasants whispered about his power and heartless government, no one would dare go against him and his evil ways.

And his evil ways spelled trouble for the dragons.  Finding their scales priceless for shields and magical potions, he ordered them to be hunted for their hides.  Spreading rumors that they were evil creatures only aided his crusade and finally the creatures found themselves dwindling in numbers.

In retaliation they vowed to leave the humans to their nightmares and find other sources for food.  Herds of sheep and goats were lost to their appetites and could not sustain them like the dreams.  Sadly, more of them began to die and the race of humanoids died with them at a faster rate, until very few were left.

For a few more years the drekans lived, but with their numbers dwindling found it impossible to seek mates.  As it was with the dragons, they were loving and faithful creatures who found their lives complete only in sharing their heart with another.  Knowing this, the dragons taught them the dance of mating to pair with a true lover, even though a lone dancer always died from a broken heart if a mate wasn’t found the seventh time.  When the dragons sought to be mated, they moved with them in the sky and not finding a lover, most drekans fell to their death below.  A few refused to dance out of the fear of dying, but only found a broken heart to be a slower killer.  For this reason, most died quickly until there was only one left…..this is her story.
